Aging brings with it a wide range of physical and
mental changes, which in turn impact the social and emotional behaviors
of seniors. Aging is not a diagnosis, but it does typically increase
susceptibility to illness and alter the body’s homeostasis resulting in
functional capacity limitations. These limitations can in turn alter the
perceptions of older persons, and impact on their activity patterns and
social interaction. Social factors undoubtedly influence healthy aging,
and lack of social opportunities and interaction have been acknowledged
to contribute to a decline in functional status.
It is essential that all persons involved in the
delivery of services to seniors possess an understanding of these
dynamic factors on the well-being of their client populations. As such,
this educational module will feature a gerontologist and nurse who can
provide valuable insights into the aging process, which can in turn
assist us all to improve the delivery of services and care to our senior
clients.
